How to get from Kalavryta to Olympia
Driving takes about 2 h–2 h 30 through the mountains of Achaia and Ilia. There is no direct bus; by public transport you go via Patras, which takes about 4–5 h with connections. The Kalavryta rack railway runs only north to Diakopto.
Best option: Car. It is the only direct option and the mountain route is much shorter than going via Patras.

Tips
- Fill up in Kalavryta before setting off; fuel stations are few on mountain roads.
- Visit the Olympia site early in the day in summer to avoid heat.
- Use offline maps; mobile coverage can be patchy.
- Combine the trip with the Odontotos rack railway from Kalavryta if coming from the coast.
Common questions
Is there a direct bus?
No. Public transport goes via Patras: a KTEL bus from Kalavryta to Patras, then a bus from Patras to Pyrgos and Olympia. With connections, it takes about 4–5 hours. Check current timetables, as services are limited, especially at weekends.
Is there a train?
No train links Kalavryta with Olympia. The Odontotos rack railway runs from Kalavryta north to Diakopto on the coast. The line to Olympia from Pyrgos has had limited or no regular service in recent years. Check current information if you hope to combine the trip with a train, as Greek regional rail services change.
How long is the drive?
About 2 h–2 h 30 on mountain roads through Achaia and Ilia. The route is scenic but winding, and fuel stations are few. In winter, snow is possible near Kalavryta, so check conditions before travelling. Allow extra time if you want to stop at villages or viewpoints on the way.
Can I do it as a day trip?
Yes, by car. With about 2 hours each way, you can spend several hours at ancient Olympia and its museum. By public transport, a same-day return is not practical. Leave early to avoid driving mountain roads after dark, and check the site’s opening hours, which are shorter in winter.
