Common questions
Is there a direct ferry from Gozo to Sicily?
No. Ferries to Sicily leave from Valletta on Malta. From Gozo, take the fast ferry from Mġarr to Valletta or the Gozo Channel ferry to Ċirkewwa, then the Virtu Ferries catamaran to Pozzallo, about 1 h 45. Allow 3–4 h in total and check current timetables.
Can I take a car from Gozo to Sicily?
Yes. Take the car on the Gozo Channel ferry to Ċirkewwa, drive to Valletta, and board the Valletta–Pozzallo catamaran, which carries vehicles. Book the car space in advance, especially in July and August. Rental cars need the company's permission to leave Malta.
Should I fly or take the ferry to Sicily?
Take the ferry for south-east Sicily (Ragusa, Modica, Noto, Syracuse), as Pozzallo is close by. Fly for Palermo or the west of the island, or for Catania if the catamaran times do not suit. Flights take about 1 h from Malta Airport, but add travel from Gozo.
Can I do Sicily as a day trip from Gozo?
Organised day trips to Sicily run from Malta, usually to Ragusa, Modica or Mount Etna, using the catamaran or a flight. From Gozo it means a very early start and late return. It is possible but tiring; one or two nights in Sicily is more relaxed.
