Tips

Common questions

How often do ferries run?

In summer there is usually at least one sailing a day, sometimes several, by a mix of fast boats and conventional ferries. In winter services drop to a few a week. Timetables are published by the operators in spring, so check current timetables before planning your island hops.

Can I fly?

No. Folegandros has no airport. Milos has a small airport with flights to Athens only. Ferries are the only practical way between the two islands, and the crossing is short. If you are coming from Athens, flying to Milos and then taking the ferry to Folegandros is a common combination.

Do I need to book ahead?

For fast boats in July and August, yes, as they can sell out. Conventional ferries usually have space for foot passengers, but cars must be booked in peak season. Outside summer, buying at the port is usually fine, though cancellations in bad weather are more common.

Can I take a car?

Yes, on conventional ferries. High-speed boats on this route generally carry passengers only or have limited car space. Folegandros is small, so many visitors use the island bus or rent a scooter instead. Car fares are much higher than passenger fares, and in August car space on conventional ferries must be booked well in advance.
