Tips

Common questions

Is there a train?

Yes. Trains on the north–south railway run between Da Nang and Hue several times a day, taking about 2 h 30 to 3 hours. The line runs along the coast near the Hai Van Pass, and the views are among the best on the line.

What about the Hai Van Pass?

The road over the pass is narrow and winding, with sea views. Most traffic now uses the tunnel, so the pass is quiet. Private car and motorbike tours often go over the pass with stops at viewpoints and Lang Co beach.

Can I do it as a day trip?

Yes, but it is a long day. With 2 to 3 hours each way, you get a few hours to see the Citadel and a tomb. Staying a night in Hue gives more time for the royal tombs and the Perfume River.

What is the cheapest way?

Shuttle buses and trains are the cheapest options, often under 250,000 VND. A private car costs more but can be shared by a group and includes stops along the way. The train is the best value if you want views of the coast without paying for a private car or motorbike tour.
