How to get from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang
The classic route is a bus to the Thai–Lao border at Chiang Khong / Huay Xai and then the two-day slow boat down the Mekong via Pakbeng. A long-distance bus from Huay Xai takes about 12–15 h, and flying means connecting through another city.
Best option: Ferry. The two-day Mekong slow boat is the main reason travellers take this route, and it is more comfortable than the long mountain bus.

Tips
- Laos issues visas on arrival at the Friendship Bridge for many nationalities; bring US dollars and a passport photo.
- Bring food, water and a cushion for the slow boat; seats are hard wooden benches on some boats.
- Pakbeng is a small village; ATMs may be unreliable, so carry kip.
- Avoid booking a whole package through agents who promise luxury; the public boat is basic.
Common questions
How long is the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang?
Two days, with an overnight stop in Pakbeng. Each day is roughly 6–8 h on the river, depending on water levels. Boats leave Huay Xai in the morning, so most travellers cross the border the day before. It is slow but is the most scenic way to reach Luang Prabang.
Is there a direct flight from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang?
No. You would need to connect via Bangkok or travel to Chiang Mai, which has had flights to Luang Prabang. Including the connection, the trip takes several hours and costs much more than the slow boat or bus. Check current schedules, as regional routes change.
Do I need a visa for Laos?
Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival at the Friendship Bridge crossing near Huay Xai, paid in US dollars with a passport photo. Some can apply for an e-visa in advance; others are visa-exempt. Rules change, so check official Lao sources before you travel, and carry clean US dollar notes.
Is the bus faster than the slow boat?
Yes, the bus from Huay Xai takes about 12–15 h, so it is a day quicker. But the roads through northern Laos are winding and tiring, and many travellers find the boat more comfortable. The boat also includes the overnight in Pakbeng, which gives a break in the trip.
