Tips

Common questions

Is there a direct flight?

There are direct flights on some days, typically operated by Lao Airlines, taking about 1 hour. On other days you need to connect via Bangkok. Schedules change by season, so check current timetables. Luang Prabang airport is about 10 minutes from the old town.

What is the slow boat?

A two-day trip down the Mekong from Huay Xai, on the Thai border, to Luang Prabang, with an overnight stop in Pakbeng. Combined with the bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong and the border crossing, the journey takes about 3 days. It is slow but scenic and popular with backpackers.

What documents do I need?

A valid passport with at least six months' validity. Many nationalities can get a Lao visa on arrival at Luang Prabang airport or the Friendship Bridge at Huay Xai, or apply online for an e-visa. Check current requirements for your nationality before travelling.

Is there a train?

Not between Chiang Mai and Luang Prabang. The Laos–China railway runs from Vientiane through Luang Prabang to China, but there is no rail link from northern Thailand. You could reach Vientiane via Nong Khai and then take the train, but that route is much longer.
