It is home to the Temple of Garni, a Greco-Roman colonnaded temple from the first century AD, the only standing building of its kind in Armenia and the former Soviet Union. The temple collapsed in an earthquake in 1679 and was carefully rebuilt in the 1970s using much of its original stone.

Next to the temple you can see the remains of a royal fortress and a Roman-era bathhouse with a well-preserved mosaic floor. A path leads down into Garni Gorge to the Symphony of the Stones, a spectacular wall of tall hexagonal basalt columns rising above the river. A short drive further up the valley is Geghard Monastery, partly carved directly out of the cliff, which together with the Upper Azat Valley forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Garni village, several families welcome visitors to watch lavash, the thin Armenian flatbread, being baked in an underground tonir oven, often with a home-cooked lunch. Garni and Geghard are the classic half-day trip from Yerevan, best from May to October.
