Matala is a small beach village on the south coast of Crete, about seventy kilometres from Heraklion, set in a bay framed by pale sandstone cliffs. The cliffs are full of man-made caves, carved as tombs in Roman and early Christian times. In the 1960s and 1970s hippies from around the world lived in them, and the village still keeps a relaxed, free-spirited mood, with painted walls and the slogan "Today is life, tomorrow never comes".

The main beach is a short walk from the tavernas, and sunsets over the Libyan Sea are the evening ritual here. For a wilder beach, follow the path over the hill to Red Beach, named after its reddish sand, about a twenty to thirty minute walk. To the north, the long sandy beach of Kommos has the remains of a Minoan harbour town, and sea turtles nest there in summer. Matala is also a good base for the Minoan Palace of Phaistos, about fifteen minutes away by car, and the ruins of Gortyn, with its famous stone law code. Try Cretan dakos, fresh fish and raki in the harbour tavernas. The best time to visit is May to October.
