Food tours in Annecy: what to eat and which tour to book

Annecy

Annecy sits on a clear Alpine lake in Haute-Savoie, with an old town of canals around the Thiou river, and it eats Savoyard: mountain cheese and potatoes. Reblochon, the soft washed-rind cheese of the surrounding Aravis and Bornes massifs, goes into tartiflette; Beaufort, Abondance and Tomme de Savoie go into fondue, raclette and croziflette (small buckwheat pasta squares called crozets baked with cheese). Diots, the local pork sausages, are cooked in white wine, and the lake supplies perch and féra, a whitefish. Savoie white wines and génépi, a mountain herb liqueur, complete the table.

Use this page to know what to order and where, with rough 2026 prices. Cheese-heavy dishes are year-round in Annecy's restaurants but feel most natural from autumn to spring; summer is lake fish and terraces. Street food, sit-down or a cooking class?

Street food

Street food is limited: crêpes, sandwiches and quiche from bakeries, market stalls, and ice cream along the canals. A picnic of market cheese, saucisson and bread by the lake is the local equivalent.

Sit-down meals

Most visitors eat in Savoyard restaurants for fondue, raclette and tartiflette, and lakeside restaurants for fish. Lunch is roughly 12:00–14:00 and dinner 19:00–21:30. Fondue and raclette are usually for a minimum of two. Book in July and August.

Cooking classes

Cooking and cheese-tasting workshops exist in and around Annecy, and some farms in the Aravis valleys offer Reblochon visits. Sessions are not daily; book ahead and check transport.

How much to budget for food

StylePer person, per day*
Budget (street food, markets)€25–40 (bakery breakfast, market picnic, crêpe or simple dinner)
Mid-range (one sit-down meal a day)€55–80 (two restaurant meals with wine)
Splurge (tasting menus, wine)€150+ (Michelin dinner by the lake)

Vegetarian, halal and gluten-free

Vegetarian & vegan: Fondue, raclette (without the charcuterie) and cheese crozets are vegetarian, though some cheeses use animal rennet. Tartiflette and diots contain pork. Vegan is very hard in Savoyard restaurants; the town has a few vegetarian and international places.

Halal: Limited. Kebab shops and some North African restaurants outside the old town offer halal food. Savoyard dishes are pork- and cheese-based; lake fish is an alternative.

Gluten-free: Fondue is eaten with bread but potatoes can be requested; raclette and tartiflette are naturally gluten-free; check charcuterie. Crozets contain wheat even when made with buckwheat. Awareness in France is reasonable; ask 'sans gluten'.

Common questions

When is the market in Annecy's old town?

The old-town market along Rue Sainte-Claire and nearby streets is traditionally held on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday mornings, with Sunday the largest. It sells cheese, charcuterie, produce and Savoyard products. Check current days and hours, as they can change seasonally.

Do I need to tip?

Service is included in French prices. Rounding up or leaving about 5% for good service is common but not expected. On a guided food tour, roughly €5–10 per person for a good guide is appreciated.

Is fondue only a winter dish?

Locals eat it mostly in cold months, but Annecy's Savoyard restaurants serve fondue, raclette and tartiflette all year. In summer, lake fish, salads and lighter dishes are more common at local tables. Fondue is usually for at least two people.

What is the difference between tartiflette and fondue?

Tartiflette is a baked dish of potatoes, onions, bacon and cream under a whole Reblochon. Fondue is a pot of several Savoie cheeses melted with white wine, shared at the table, into which you dip bread. Both are filling; one is usually enough for a meal.

How much should I budget for food per day?

About €25–40 per person with a market picnic and a simple dinner. Two restaurant meals with wine run about €55–80. Annecy and the lake also have several Michelin-starred restaurants, with dinners starting around €100–150 per person.

Do I need to book restaurants?

In July and August and on weekends, yes, especially for lakeside tables and well-known Savoyard restaurants. Outside summer, booking a day ahead is usually enough. Many restaurants close one or two days a week.
