Why visit Visby?

Visby is the main town on Gotland, Sweden's largest island, out in the Baltic Sea. In the Middle Ages it was a rich trading town of the Hanseatic League, and much of that past still stands. A medieval stone ring wall, more than three kilometres long and dotted with towers, still wraps around the old town, which is why the Hanseatic Town of Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside the wall you find cobbled lanes, old merchant houses, rose-covered cottages and the ruins of many medieval churches.

A good day starts with a walk along the wall and out through one of its gates, then a visit to the roofless ruins of St Karin's and St Nicolai's churches. Visby Cathedral, the only medieval church in town still in use, rises above the rooftops. The Gotland Museum tells the island's long story, and the Botanical Garden and Almedalen park are lovely places to rest. Each August the town fills with costumes, markets and jousting during Medieval Week. Beyond Visby you can cycle to beaches and see the limestone sea stacks Gotland is known for. Ferries sail to Visby from Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, and from Oskarshamn. The best time to visit is June to August, with May and September quieter.
