Why visit Vientiane?
Vientiane, the capital of Laos, lies on a bend of the Mekong River facing Thailand. It is one of the calmest capitals in Asia, with Buddhist temples, French colonial buildings, baguette stalls and a riverside walk where locals exercise and eat at the night market.
Pha That Luang, a golden stupa first built in the 16th century, is the national symbol of Laos. Wat Si Saket has thousands of small Buddha images in its cloister walls and is one of the city's oldest temples, while Haw Phra Kaew, opposite, is now a museum of religious art. Climb Patuxai, a victory monument inspired by the Arc de Triomphe, for a view over the city. The COPE Visitor Centre explains the legacy of unexploded bombs from the Vietnam War era. About 25 km away, Buddha Park has more than 200 concrete Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. Vientiane is also the start of the fast train to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang. Eat larb, sticky rice, khao piak noodle soup and Lao coffee.
