Why visit Vang Vieng?

Vang Vieng is a small town on the Nam Song River in northern Laos, surrounded by dramatic limestone karst mountains, caves and rice fields. Once known for tubing parties, it is now mostly an adventure and nature destination, and it is an easy stop on the train between Vientiane and Luang Prabang.

Float down the Nam Song by tube or kayak, take a hot-air balloon flight over the karsts at sunrise, or ride a buggy or bike through the countryside. The Blue Lagoon swimming holes, with a tree to jump from, are close to Tham Phu Kham cave. Tham Chang and Tham Nam, where you pull yourself through a water cave on a tube, are other popular caves. Hike up to Pha Ngern or Nam Xay viewpoints for a view of the valley, best at sunset. There is zip-lining, rock climbing and paragliding too. Evenings are relaxed, with riverside bars and sunset views. Try river fish, larb and fresh fruit shakes.
