Why visit Ubud?

Ubud is the cultural heart of Bali, in the green hills of the island's interior, about an hour from the airport. It is surrounded by rice terraces, river gorges and villages known for painting, wood carving and dance, and it has become a centre for yoga, wellness and healthy food.

Visit the Ubud Palace and watch a Legong or Barong dance performance in the evening, browse the Ubud Art Market, and walk through the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary with its moss-covered temples. The Campuhan Ridge Walk follows a grassy ridge between two rivers, and the Tegallalang rice terraces are just north of town. Day trips reach Tirta Empul, a water temple with holy springs, Goa Gajah (the Elephant Cave), Gunung Kawi with its rock-cut shrines, and sunrise treks on Mount Batur. The ARMA and Neka museums show Balinese art. Try babi guling (roast suckling pig), bebek betutu (slow-cooked duck), nasi campur and fresh jamu drinks.
