Why visit Gili Islands?

The Gili Islands are three small coral islands off the northwest coast of Lombok in Indonesia, reached by fast boat from Bali or from Lombok's Bangsal harbour. There are no cars or motorbikes, only bicycles and horse carts, and each island is ringed by white sand and clear water full of sea turtles.

Gili Trawangan is the largest and liveliest, with a night market, beach bars and the famous swings in the sea at sunset. Gili Air is a relaxed mix of cafes and quiet beaches, and Gili Meno is the smallest and most peaceful, with a lake and the underwater statue installation Nest. Snorkel from the beach to see green turtles, or take a glass-bottom boat trip around all three islands. The Gilis are a popular place to learn to dive, with sites such as Shark Point and Turtle Heaven. Cycle around Gili Trawangan in about an hour and climb its small hill for a view of Mount Rinjani on Lombok and Mount Agung on Bali. Eat fresh grilled fish at the night market.
