Why visit Toraja?

Tana Toraja is a highland region in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, home to the Toraja people. Among green rice terraces, bamboo forests and misty hills, they have kept a rich culture centred on family, ancestors and the journey of the soul after death. The region is famous for its tongkonan, the traditional ancestral houses with tall, curved roofs shaped like the bow of a boat, and for its unique ways of honouring the dead.

Most visitors stay in Rantepao, the main town. Nearby, the village of Kete Kesu has well-kept rows of tongkonan and old graves. At Londa and Lemo, the dead are laid to rest in caves and in tombs cut into rock cliffs, watched over by carved wooden figures called tau-tau. At Bori Kalimbuang you can see a field of standing stones, and the road to Batutumonga offers wide views over the rice terraces. Funeral ceremonies are major family events that can last several days, and guests are sometimes welcome. If you attend one, go with a local guide, dress modestly, bring a small gift for the family and follow their lead. Tana Toraja is usually reached by a long road journey from Makassar. The best time to visit is the drier months, roughly June to September.
