Why visit Tanna?

Tanna is a green, hilly island in the south of Vanuatu, best known for Mount Yasur, an active volcano that you can visit up close. It is one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world: a four-wheel-drive track brings you near the top, and a short walk leads to the crater rim, where you can hear the deep booms and watch glowing lava thrown into the air. Visits usually start in the late afternoon so you see the crater both in daylight and after dark, which is the most dramatic moment. Access depends on the current volcanic alert level, so local guides decide how close you can go.

Beyond the volcano, Tanna is a place where traditional life is still strong. Some kastom villages welcome visitors to see dances, cooking and daily life, always with a local guide. You can walk across the dark ash plain below Yasur, swim and snorkel in the quiet bays, and visit Port Resolution, a sheltered harbour named after the ship of Captain James Cook. The island also grows its own coffee. Tanna is reached by short domestic flights from Port Vila to the airport near Lenakel, and most visitors stay in simple bungalows. The best time to visit is the cooler, drier season from May to October.
