Why visit Bay of Islands?

The Bay of Islands is a subtropical bay in Northland, at the top of New Zealand's North Island, with around 144 islands, sheltered beaches and a rich history. It is where the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand's founding document, was signed in 1840 between the British Crown and Māori chiefs.

Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to see the Treaty House, a carved meeting house and one of the world's largest ceremonial war canoes. Paihia is the main base, with boat trips around the islands and to the Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett, often with dolphins on the way. Take the short ferry to Russell, once a rough whaling port and New Zealand's first permanent European settlement, now a quiet village with historic buildings such as Christ Church. Kerikeri has the Stone Store and Kemp House, among the oldest buildings in the country. Sailing, kayaking, fishing and diving are popular, and the Poor Knights Islands, further south, are a renowned dive site.
