Why visit Salento?

Salento is a small town in the department of Quindío, in Colombia's coffee-growing region. It is part of the Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is known for its brightly painted houses with colorful balconies and doors.

The main draw is the Cocora Valley, where Quindío wax palms, Colombia's national tree, rise above green hills. A popular loop hike through the valley takes most of a day and passes cloud forest and river crossings. Calle Real, the main street, is lined with craft shops and cafés and leads to a viewpoint over the town and valley. Several family coffee farms near town offer tours showing how coffee is grown, picked and roasted. Jeeps known as Willys provide transport to the valley and nearby villages. Visitors can try tejo, a traditional Colombian game in which players throw metal weights at small targets that explode on impact. Trout served with patacones is the classic local dish.
