Why visit Mompox?

Mompox, officially Santa Cruz de Mompox, is a small colonial town in northern Colombia, in the department of Bolívar, built on an island in the Magdalena River. In Spanish colonial times it was an important river port, but when river traffic moved elsewhere the town was left behind, and its old streets survived almost unchanged. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and today it is one of the most peaceful and atmospheric places in the Colombian Caribbean region.

The best way to enjoy Mompox is slowly, on foot. Walk along the Albarrada, the riverside promenade, past whitewashed houses with tall wooden doors and iron window grilles. Visit the Iglesia de Santa Bárbara, with its unusual octagonal tower and balcony, and the town's old cemetery, shaded and quiet. Mompox is famous for its fine silver filigree jewellery, and you can watch artisans at work in small family workshops. In the late afternoon, take a boat trip into the surrounding wetlands to look for birds and other wildlife. Holy Week is celebrated here with well-known processions. The town is reached by road from Cartagena or Santa Marta, a long but rewarding journey. It is hot all year, and the drier months from December to April are the most pleasant time to visit.
