Why visit Rhine Valley?

The Upper Middle Rhine Valley, between Bingen and Koblenz in western Germany, is a UNESCO-listed stretch of river where steep vineyard slopes, medieval castles and small wine towns line both banks. It is one of the most romantic landscapes in Europe and the inspiration for many German legends.

Take a boat cruise past the Lorelei rock, where legend says a siren lured sailors to their doom, and past castles such as Marksburg, the only hilltop castle on the Rhine never destroyed, Burg Rheinfels and Pfalzgrafenstein, a toll castle on an island in the river. Stop in the half-timbered towns of Bacharach, Oberwesel, St. Goar and Boppard, and in Rüdesheim with its lively Drosselgasse and cable car to the Niederwald Monument. Hike sections of the Rheinsteig or Rheinburgenweg trails through the vineyards, or cycle along the river. Taste the Riesling wines grown on the slopes, and finish in Koblenz at the Deutsches Eck, where the Moselle joins the Rhine.
