Why visit Rarotonga?

Rarotonga is the main island of the Cook Islands in the South Pacific, a small volcanic island ringed by a turquoise lagoon and white beaches, with jungle-covered mountains in the centre. The whole island is only about 32 kilometres around, and a single coastal road circles it.

Muri Beach has a calm, shallow lagoon with small islets that you can kayak or wade to, while the lagoon at Aroa and Titikaveka is good for snorkelling. Hike the Cross Island Track past the Te Rua Manga needle, a rock pinnacle in the rainforest. On Saturday mornings, Punanga Nui Market in Avarua sells local food, crafts and island music. Cultural evenings at places such as Te Vara Nui present Cook Islands dance and drumming. Catch the island bus that runs clockwise and anticlockwise around the island. A short flight takes you to Aitutaki, with one of the most famous lagoons in the Pacific. Try ika mata, raw fish in coconut cream.
