Why visit Moorea?

Moorea is a mountainous island in French Polynesia, just a short ferry ride from Tahiti. Its jagged green peaks, two deep bays and a turquoise lagoon make it one of the most beautiful islands in the South Pacific, and it is easier to reach and often more affordable than Bora Bora.

Drive or cycle the coastal road around the island, about 60 kilometres, and climb to the Belvedere lookout for the classic view over Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay with Mount Rotui between them. Snorkel in the lagoon with rays and blacktip reef sharks, visit the ancient marae (temple) sites in the Opunohu Valley, and taste fresh fruit at the pineapple plantations and the fruit juice factory. Overwater bungalows line parts of the lagoon, while family pensions offer simpler stays. From July to November humpback whales visit the waters around the island. Try poisson cru, raw fish in lime and coconut milk, the local national dish.
