Why visit Palau?

Palau is a small island country in the western Pacific, made up of hundreds of islands surrounded by coral reefs. It is one of the best places in the world for diving and snorkelling, and it takes care of its sea: when you arrive, a pledge to protect nature is stamped in your passport, and sunscreens harmful to coral are banned. Most visitors stay in Koror, the main town, and the currency is the US dollar.

The highlight is the Rock Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of green, mushroom-shaped limestone islands rising from turquoise water. Boat trips stop at the Milky Way, a lagoon with soft white mud that people spread on their skin, and at quiet beaches for lunch. Divers come for sites like Blue Corner, known for sharks and big schools of fish, and German Channel, where manta rays are often seen. Jellyfish Lake, where you can swim among harmless jellyfish, is a famous experience, but check if it is open when you go. On the large island of Babeldaob you can find waterfalls and ancient stone monoliths. Palau's international airport is near Koror, with connecting flights through regional hubs in Asia and the Pacific. The best time to visit is roughly December to April, the drier season.
