Why visit Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida is a rugged island southeast of Bali, about 30 to 45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur. Its dramatic cliffs, turquoise bays and manta rays have made it one of the most photographed places in Indonesia, while the island itself is still rural, with steep and sometimes rough roads.

Kelingking Beach, where a headland shaped like a T-rex drops into the sea, is the most famous view; a steep path leads down to the sand. Nearby are Broken Beach, a bay enclosed by a natural rock arch, and Angel's Billabong, a tidal rock pool that is only safe at low tide and in calm seas. On the east coast, climb down to Diamond Beach and see the Thousand Islands viewpoint and the tree house at Rumah Pohon. Snorkelling trips visit Manta Point and Crystal Bay, where reef manta rays feed year round and oceanic sunfish appear from July to October. Goa Giri Putri is a Hindu temple inside a cave. Stay a night to avoid rushing the long drives.
