Why visit Mysore?

Mysore, officially Mysuru, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, was the capital of the Wodeyar kingdom and is one of the most elegant cities in India. Its grand palaces, broad streets and gardens give it a royal atmosphere, and it is known for silk, sandalwood and incense.

The Mysore Palace, a blend of Indo-Saracenic styles, is the main sight; on Sunday evenings and during festivals it is lit by nearly 100,000 bulbs. The city's Dasara festival in autumn is famous throughout India, with processions and elephants. Climb, or drive, Chamundi Hill to the Chamundeshwari Temple and the giant Nandi bull carved from rock. Explore the colourful Devaraja Market, full of flowers, fruit and spices, and the Jaganmohan Palace art gallery. Nearby are the island fortress town of Srirangapatna, linked to Tipu Sultan, the Brindavan Gardens and the temples of Somnathpur. Mysore is also a centre for Ashtanga yoga, drawing students from around the world.
