Why visit Milford Sound?

Milford Sound, also known by its Māori name Piopiotahi, lies in Fiordland National Park in the far southwest of New Zealand's South Island. Despite its name it is a fiord, carved by glaciers, with steep green cliffs rising straight out of dark water. Its best-known landmark is Mitre Peak, a pointed mountain that has become one of the classic images of New Zealand. The area is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and is famous for its many waterfalls.

Most visitors take a boat cruise along the fiord to the open Tasman Sea, passing waterfalls such as Lady Bowen Falls and Stirling Falls, and often seeing fur seals resting on the rocks and sometimes dolphins. You can also explore by sea kayak or take a scenic flight over the mountains. The Milford Track, one of the country's Great Walks, ends here. The Milford Road from Te Anau is a beautiful drive in itself, with stops at the Mirror Lakes and a passage through the Homer Tunnel. This is one of the wettest places in New Zealand, but rain makes hundreds of temporary waterfalls pour down the cliffs. The best time to visit is November to April, when days are longer and the road is easier to drive.
