Why visit Levoca?
Levoča is a small historic town in the Spiš region of eastern Slovakia, still wrapped in most of its medieval walls. Its long central square is lined with burgher houses, the Renaissance town hall and the Gothic Church of St James. Inside the church stands the main altar carved in wood by Master Paul of Levoča in the early sixteenth century, one of the tallest and finest Gothic altars anywhere, and close up the faces of the saints are full of detail. Levoča is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with nearby Spiš Castle and its associated monuments.
Spend a morning on the square, see the old iron Cage of Shame beside the town hall, and walk a section of the walls. Above the town, the pilgrimage basilica on Marian Hill looks out over the countryside. A short drive east, the ruins of Spiš Castle spread across a white limestone hill and are one of the largest castle sites in Central Europe; below them lies the church town of Spišská Kapitula. The High Tatras are close too. Most travellers arrive by train at Poprad and continue by bus or car. The best time to visit is from May to September, when the castle and churches have longer opening hours.
