Why visit Košice?

Košice is Slovakia's second-largest city and the capital of the country's east, a compact, walkable place that sees far fewer visitors than Bratislava. Its long, lens-shaped main street, Hlavná ulica, is lined with pastel baroque and art nouveau facades, cafés and terraces, and in the evening the Singing Fountain in front of the State Theatre plays to music and lights.

The centrepiece is St. Elisabeth Cathedral, the largest church in Slovakia and the easternmost Gothic cathedral in Europe; you can climb its north tower for views over the old town. Beside it stand the small St. Michael's Chapel and the Urban Tower. Underground, the Lower Gate museum shows the excavated foundations of the medieval city defences. The East Slovak Museum keeps the Košice Golden Treasure, nearly three thousand gold coins found during building work in 1935. Košice was European Capital of Culture in 2013, and many old barracks and pools were turned into arts spaces. Try bryndzové halušky, potato dumplings with sheep's cheese, garlic soup served in a bread bowl, and dry Tokaj wine from the small Slovak part of the Tokaj region, about an hour away. May to September is the best time to visit.
