Why visit Lake Toba?

Lake Toba is a vast lake in the highlands of North Sumatra, Indonesia, filling the caldera of a supervolcano that erupted with enormous force tens of thousands of years ago. It is the largest lake in Indonesia, and in its middle lies Samosir, a large island of green hills, small villages and rice fields. The lake is the homeland of the Toba Batak people, known for their traditional houses with sweeping curved roofs, their music and their strong customs.

Most travellers stay in Tuk Tuk, a small peninsula on Samosir full of relaxed guesthouses and lakeside cafés. From there you can rent a scooter or bicycle to visit Tomok, with the old stone tomb of a Batak king, and Ambarita, where stone chairs mark an old village meeting place. At Simanindo you can see traditional houses and Batak dances, and there are hot springs near Pangururan on the west side of the island. Swimming in the cool lake and simply watching the light change over the water are part of the charm. Most visitors fly to Medan, travel by road to Parapat and take the ferry across to Samosir; there is also an airport at Silangit, closer to the lake. The drier months from May to September are the best time to visit.
