Why visit Kasane?

Kasane is a small town in the far north of Botswana, on the banks of the Chobe River close to where Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe meet. It is the gateway to Chobe National Park, famous for its very large elephant population, and it makes an easy, rewarding first safari: the park entrance is only minutes from town, and lodges line the riverfront.

The highlight is a boat safari on the Chobe River, especially in the late afternoon, when herds of elephants come down to drink and swim while hippos, crocodiles and buffalo gather along the banks and the sun sets over the floodplains. Morning and afternoon game drives along the Chobe riverfront can reveal giraffes, antelopes and, with luck, lions and leopards, and the area is excellent for birdwatching and wildlife photography. Fishing trips for tigerfish are also popular. Victoria Falls is close enough for a day trip across the border to Zimbabwe or Zambia, so many travellers combine the two. Kasane has its own airport with regional flights, and it is also reached by road from Victoria Falls. The dry season from May to October is the best time for game viewing, as animals gather at the river, while the green summer months are wonderful for birds.
