Why visit Kampot?

Kampot is a laid-back riverside town in southern Cambodia, close to the Gulf of Thailand. Its French colonial shophouses line the Praek Tuek Chhu River, with Bokor Mountain rising behind, and it is famous around the world for Kampot pepper, which has protected geographical status.

Visit a pepper farm such as La Plantation to see how black, red and white pepper are grown, and take a sunset boat trip or paddleboard on the river to watch the fireflies. Bokor National Park has the abandoned Bokor Hill Station, an old French resort with a ruined church and casino, plus waterfalls and views over the coast. The town of Kep, half an hour away, is known for its crab market, where crabs are cooked with fresh green Kampot pepper. Phnom Chhnork is a cave temple with a 7th-century brick shrine inside. Cycle through salt fields and durian farms, and finish with riverside bars and Khmer food such as fish amok and lok lak.
