Why visit Battambang?

Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city, on the Sangker River in the northwest. It has some of the best-preserved French colonial architecture in the country, a creative arts scene and a peaceful countryside full of rice fields, villages and old temples.

Ride the bamboo train, a small platform on rails that runs through the fields, and visit the hilltop temple of Phnom Sampeau, with its Killing Caves memorial and, at dusk, millions of bats pouring out of a cave. The 11th-century Khmer temple of Wat Banan, reached by a long stairway, has views over the plain. Phare, the Cambodian Circus, which began in Battambang, holds acrobatic shows, and galleries and cafes fill the old town around the market. Tuk-tuk tours visit makers of rice paper, fish paste and rice wine. Battambang is about five hours by road from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, and the boat to Siem Reap runs in the wet season. Eat nom banh chok noodles and grilled fish.
