Why visit Jerash?

Jerash is a city in northern Jordan, north of Amman, built beside the ruins of the ancient city of Gerasa. It is one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities in the world. The ruins are an easy day trip from Amman and one of Jordan's top sights after Petra.

Visitors enter through Hadrian's Arch, built to honour the emperor's visit, and continue past the hippodrome. The Oval Plaza, surrounded by a curving row of columns, is one of the most striking sights of the site. From there, the Cardo, a long colonnaded street paved with original stones, runs through the heart of the ancient city. The South Theatre still has excellent acoustics, and the Temple of Artemis and Temple of Zeus stand on high ground with wide views. Every summer, the Jerash Festival brings music and performances to the ancient theatres. Nearby, Ajloun Castle, an Ayyubid fortress on a hilltop, can be combined in the same trip, and lunch usually means mansaf or maqluba.
