Why visit Aqaba?

Aqaba is Jordan's only coastal city, on the Gulf of Aqaba at the northern tip of the Red Sea, where Jordan, Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia almost meet. It is a relaxed resort town and a gateway to the country's southern highlights.

The Red Sea here is excellent for diving and snorkelling, with coral reefs close to shore in the Aqaba Marine Park and wrecks such as the Cedar Pride and a sunk military tank and aircraft that now form artificial reefs. Glass-bottom boats show the reefs to non-divers. In town, the Aqaba Fort dates from the Mamluk era and saw a famous battle during the Arab Revolt, and the huge Arab Revolt flagpole is a landmark. Wadi Rum, the red desert of sandstone mountains where Lawrence of Arabia rode and many films have been shot, is about an hour away, and Petra about two hours. Eat sayadieh, the local spiced fish and rice dish, in the seafood restaurants downtown.
