Why visit Isle of Pines?

The Isle of Pines, or Île des Pins, is a small island south of Grande Terre, the main island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Its name comes from the tall, narrow araucaria pines that line its shores and give it a look unlike any other tropical island. White sand, very clear turquoise water and quiet villages make it one of the most loved escapes in the region, and Kanak culture remains an important part of island life.

The neighbouring bays of Kuto and Kanumera are the heart of the island, with soft sand, calm water and good snorkelling. At Oro Bay you can walk through shallow channels to the natural pool, a sheltered lagoon of clear water surrounded by pines and rocks. Many visitors also sail across Upi Bay on a traditional outrigger canoe, visit the Queen Hortense Cave or climb Pic N'ga for wide views over the lagoon. You will also find ruins from the island's time as a nineteenth-century penal colony. The island is reached by a short domestic flight or by ferry from Nouméa. The best time to visit is April to May and September to November, when the weather is warm but drier and more comfortable.
