Why visit Himare?
Himarë is a small coastal town on the Albanian Riviera, in the south of the country, where the mountains meet the clear blue Ionian Sea. The modern town spreads around a bay with a long pebble beach and a seafront of cafés and fish tavernas, while the old town and its castle sit on a hilltop above, with stone houses, small churches and views along the coast. Many people here speak Greek as well as Albanian.
The area is all about beaches. Livadhi, just north of town, is a long beach with a few beach bars and olive groves behind it, while Potami and Spille are within walking distance of the centre. Further north, near the village of Vuno, Gjipe Beach lies at the mouth of a canyon and is reached on foot or by boat. A short drive south, Porto Palermo Bay hides a small triangular fortress linked with Ali Pasha of Tepelena. Drive north over the Llogara Pass for one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the Balkans. Eat grilled fish, octopus and local olive oil, often at prices far lower than across the sea in Greece or Italy. The best time to visit is June to September, with May and October quieter and still warm.
