Why visit Dijon?

Dijon was the capital of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy, and its centre, part of the UNESCO-listed Climats of Burgundy, is full of half-timbered houses, glazed-tile roofs and grand stone mansions. The Palace of the Dukes and States of Burgundy houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts, with the elaborate tombs of the dukes.

Follow the Owl's Trail, marked by small brass owl plaques in the pavement, to the main sights, and touch the carved owl on the Church of Notre-Dame for luck. The Cité Internationale de la Gastronomie et du Vin, opened in 2022, celebrates French food culture. The covered market Les Halles is busy on market days. Dijon is famous for its mustard, and for crème de cassis, and the surrounding region for dishes such as bœuf bourguignon and œufs en meurette. The Route des Grands Crus starts just south of the city, passing vineyard villages such as Gevrey-Chambertin and Vougeot on the way to Beaune.
