How many days do you need in Shkoder?
Shkoder needs 4 days to balance the historic core with Lake Shkoder and the Accursed Mountains. It is the gateway to the north; rushing skips the essential shift from urban Ottoman history to rugged Alpine landscapes.
Short answer

2 days
Focus on Rozafa Castle for sunset, the Marubi National Museum of Photography, and Kole Idromeno Street. You have time for a quick cycle to Shiroka village on the lake shore for carp over lunch.
You give up: You completely miss the Theth valley hike and the Koman Lake ferry trek.
4 days
Adds a deep dive into the north. After the city sights, take the early shuttle to Theth. Hike to the Blue Eye and the Grunas Waterfall, staying overnight in a traditional stone guesthouse.
You give up: You still lack time for the Valbona pass or the long ferry to Fierza.
6 days
The ultimate northern circuit. Includes the city, then the full Valbona-to-Theth trek via the Koman Lake ferry. This covers the most dramatic peaks and remote village life without rushing transport.
You give up: Nothing significant; this covers all major Shkoder region highlights thoroughly.
If you can stay longer
An extra 3 days allows for the full Peaks of the Balkans loop or a detour to Shengjin for Adriatic beaches and the Rana e Hedhun sand dunes.

Common questions
Is it walkable?
The city center around the Pjaca is compact and pedestrian-friendly. However, Rozafa Castle is a 45-minute walk or 10-minute drive away, and reaching the Lake Shkoder waterfront in Shiroka requires a bike or taxi due to the distance from the historic core.
How do I get to Theth?
Shared 4x4 furgons depart daily around 7:00 AM from Shkoder. The drive takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours now that the road is paved, but private transfers are faster. Always book your return seat in advance through your guesthouse to avoid being stranded.
Is the Koman ferry worth it?
Absolutely. It is often cited as one of the world's most scenic boat trips. The journey takes about 3 hours one way through deep canyons. It requires a very early 6:00 AM start from Shkoder to catch the main passenger ferry at the dam.
