How many days do you need in Pingyao?
Give Pingyao 4 days to properly explore the Ancient City inside the grand Ming-era city walls. Two days cover the urban core, while four allow crucial day trips to Wang Family Courtyard and Zhangbi Ancient Castle without rushing through crowds.
Short answer

2 days
Walk the intact Ming City Walls, explore Rishengchang Draft Bank, and visit the Ancient City Government Office. Walk South Street and see Shuanglin Temple's stunning painted sculptures just outside the walls.
You give up: You skip distant courtyard mansions and subterranean military networks like Zhangbi.
3 days
Covers all inner-wall sites including Rishengchang and the City Wall, plus Shuanglin Temple. You also add a full day trip to the sprawling Wang Family Courtyard, vastly grander than Qiao Family Courtyard.
You give up: Misses the underground tunnels of Zhangbi Ancient Castle and Zhenguo Temple's rare 10th-century wooden hall.
4 days
Complete ancient city experience. Explore all inner UNESCO sights, Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples, Wang Family Courtyard, and the fascinating subterranean defense tunnels of Zhangbi Ancient Castle at a relaxed pace.
You give up: Nothing major; you cover the finest Jin merchant architecture and regional historic sites.
If you can stay longer
Extra days let you venture further to Mount Mian (Mianshan) for cliffside monasteries and Taoist shrines, or take the high-speed train to Taiyuan to see the Jinci Temple complex and Shanxi Museum.

Common questions
Is the Ancient City Pass worth it?
Yes, the unified 125 RMB ticket covers 22 internal attractions including the City Walls, Rishengchang, and the Yamun for three days. You cannot buy single tickets for individual sites inside the old town walls.
Should I stay inside or outside the city walls?
Stay inside the walls in a restored Jin-style courtyard hotel for the atmosphere. The old town is mostly pedestrianized, making it easy to walk everywhere early in the morning before daytime tour groups arrive.
How do I get to Wang Family Courtyard?
Take a local bus or private car rental from Pingyao; it takes about one hour each way. It is far larger and less commercialized than the Qiao Family Courtyard, making it the superior day trip choice.
