How many days do you need in Matala?
Matala deserves 3 to 4 days. While famous for its artificial Neolithic caves and hippy history, its true value lies as a base for South Crete. Two days cover the town and Red Beach, but four let you hike Agiofarago Gorge and explore ancient Phaistos without rushing.
Short answer

2 days
Focus on Matala town, swimming off the main beach, and exploring the Roman-era cliff caves. Hike over the headland via the marked path to the orange sands of Red Beach (Kokkini Ammos). Finish with fresh fish at a cliffside tavern overlooking the bay.
You give up: You miss the Minoan Palace of Phaistos, Agiofarago Gorge, and Kommos Beach.
3 days
Covers all 2-day sights plus a trip inland to the ruins of Phaistos and the nearby Minoan villa at Agia Triada. Spend the late afternoon at Kommos Beach watching the sunset over the Paximadia islands, followed by dinner in Kalamaki.
You give up: You skip hiking down the remote Agiofarago Gorge to its isolated beach.
4 days
Includes everything in the 3-day plan plus a morning drive to dirt-track parking for the Agiofarago Gorge hike, passing the church of St. Anthony to reach the hidden cove. Add a visit to the traditional village of Zaros for local trout.
You give up: You lose out on day trips farther west to Preveli Palm Forest.
If you can stay longer
An extra 2 to 3 days lets you venture farther west along the rugged southern coast to Preveli Monastery and Palm Beach, explore the historic mountain town of Spili, or take a boat trip from Chora Sfakion to Loutro.

Yes, the archaeological site covering the carved sandstone caves is open daily for a small entrance fee. You can climb inside several chambers, though some higher caves are fenced off for safety and preservation.
Do I need a car in Matala?
A car is strongly recommended. While local buses connect Matala to Heraklion and Moires, having your own vehicle is essential to reach Phaistos, Kommos, Agiofarago trailhead, and the secluded beaches of the southern coast efficiently.
Is Red Beach easy to reach on foot?
The hike from Matala to Red Beach takes about 30 minutes over a rocky, exposed hill with loose scree. It requires sturdy shoes and basic fitness. Alternatively, local water taxis operate from Matala beach during peak summer months.
