How many days do you need in Kilimanjaro?
Give it 7 to 9 days. Scaling Mount Kilimanjaro is not a standard sightseeing trip; it requires a multi-day trek like the Machame or Lemosho route for safe, gradual altitude acclimatization to reach Uhuru Peak successfully.
Short answer

5 days
Climb via the Marangu Route, the only path with hut accommodation. It is the fastest ascent but offers very low summit success rates due to rapid altitude gain. You will see rainforest and moorland zones.
You give up: You miss proper acclimatization, scenic routes like Lemosho, and views of the Shira Plateau.
7 days
Trek the popular Machame Route (Whiskey Route). This allows better acclimatization with a 'climb high, sleep low' profile, taking you through rainforest, Shira Plateau, Barranco Wall, and Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak.
You give up: You miss the quieter Northern Circuit and the luxury of unhurried crater camping.
9 days
Trek the scenic Lemosho or Northern Circuit routes. This offers the highest summit success rates, pristine wilderness, stunning views of the Shira Plateau, and ample time for your body to adjust to the extreme altitude.
You give up: You miss nothing on the mountain, though it requires excellent physical stamina.
If you can stay longer
An extra 3 days lets you recover with a wildlife safari in nearby Arusha National Park or Tarangire, visit the Chemka Hot Springs, or relax in the coffee-growing town of Materuni.

Common questions
Do I need a guide to climb?
Yes, park regulations strictly prohibit solo climbs. You must hire a licensed local guide, porters, and a cook. They manage safety, meals, and gear, which is vital for reaching Uhuru Peak.
Which route is the easiest?
Marangu is physically easiest with gradual slopes and huts, but has low success rates. Machame and Lemosho are tougher but offer far better acclimatization, leading to a much higher chance of summiting.
When is the best time to climb?
The dry seasons from late June to October and January to March offer the best weather, clear skies, and safer trail conditions. Avoid the long rains of April and May.
