How many days do you need in Hampi?

Hampi requires at least 4 days to absorb the scale of the Vijayanagara ruins without burnout. Two days barely covers the main temples, but four allows time for the Virupaksha, Vitthala, and Hazararama temples, plus climbing Matanga Hill and exploring the surreal boulder landscapes of Anegundi across the Tungabhadra river.

2 days

Focus on the Royal Centre and Sacred Centre. Day one covers Virupaksha Temple, Hemakuta Hill, and the Vittala Temple complex. Day two explores the Lotus Mahal, Elephant Stables, and a sunset trek up Matanga Hill. This is a fast-paced loop that hits the essential architectural highlights.

You give up: You miss the tranquil Anegundi village, the Anjanadri Hill sunrise trek, and the chance to wander the boulder-strewn landscape at a relaxed pace.

3 days

Includes everything in the two-day plan plus a dedicated day to cross the river. Rent a scooter to ride through the rice paddies, visit Pampa Sarovar, and climb Anjanadri Hill. You gain time to photograph the Queen’s Bath and wander the vibrant bazaar without rushing between sites.

You give up: You miss the remote ruins of Achyutaraya Temple and the opportunity for a slower, quiet immersion in the rural side of the valley.

5 days

The complete Hampi experience. You can explore the Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, wander the lesser-known ruins near the Talaghatta gate, and spend extra time in Anegundi. It allows for a relaxed schedule, lingering at monuments during the golden hour and experiencing local life away from the tourist trail.

You give up: Nothing of significance. Five days is the maximum time needed to fully exhaust the archaeological and natural wonders of the entire Hampi region.

If you can stay longer

An extra 2-3 days allows for a day trip to Badami, Aihole, and Pattadakal. These Chalukyan sites offer incredible rock-cut cave temples and early structural architecture that contextualize the evolution of Indian masonry, providing a deep historical complement to the Vijayanagara ruins found throughout the Hampi valley.

Common questions

Is Hampi walkable?

The main temple complexes are walkable, but the site spans many kilometers. Between the Sacred Centre and the Royal Centre, you will need a bicycle, scooter, or auto-rickshaw. Walking the entire area in the heat is exhausting and inefficient, so securing local transport is highly recommended.

When is the best time to visit?

Visit between October and March. The weather is dry and significantly cooler, making it feasible to climb the hills and trek through the boulder fields. Avoid April through June, as temperatures frequently exceed 40°C, making daytime exploration of the exposed stone ruins dangerous and physically draining.

Should I stay in Hampi Bazaar or Anegundi?

Hampi Bazaar keeps you close to the major monuments and evening temple atmosphere. Anegundi offers a quieter, rural vibe across the river with better cafes. Most travelers prefer Hampi Bazaar for the authentic experience, while those seeking a chilled, backpacker-friendly environment usually opt for the Anegundi side.
