How many days do you need in Alesund?
Give it 4 days. The Art Nouveau center is compact, but the real draw is the surrounding archipelago and fjords. You need time for weather windows to climb Aksla and navigate the Hjørundfjord ferry schedules, which take longer than maps suggest.
Short answer

2 days
Walk the Art Nouveau district, climb 418 steps to Fjellstua viewpoint, and visit the Atlantic Sea-Park. You'll see the Brosundet canal and the Sunnmøre Museum's historic boats. It's a brisk pace focused strictly on the town island and immediate periphery.
You give up: You skip deep fjord cruises like Geiranger and hiking the Alnes lighthouse trails on Godøya.
4 days
Includes the town highlights plus a full-day boat trip to Geirangerfjord or Hjørundfjord. You have time to drive to the bird island of Runde or hike the Sugar Lump mountain for a panoramic view of the jagged Sunnmøre Alps without rushing.
You give up: You miss the multi-day trekking routes in the inland alpine valleys and the Nordfjord region.
6 days
This allows for overnighting in the Sunnmøre Alps for serious hiking or kayaking. You can add a scenic drive to the Trollstigen mountain road or the Atlantic Ocean Road, accounting for the slow, ferry-dependent coastal driving speeds and frequent tunnel stops.
You give up: Only the most remote inner-fjord villages and distant southern glaciers remain unseen.
If you can stay longer
An extra 3 days allows for the 'Golden Route' drive to Geiranger and Trollstigen, or a dedicated wildlife trip to see puffins on Runde Island between May and August, which is a full-day commitment from town.

Common questions
Is a rental car necessary?
For just the town and Aksla, no. However, to see the best of the Sunnmøre Alps or reach the Atlantic Ocean Road, a car is vital. Public buses exist but are infrequent and can turn a one-hour drive into a three-hour ordeal.
When is the best time to visit?
June to August offers the midnight sun and open hiking trails. Many fjord cruises and the scenic Trollstigen road close in winter due to snow. If visiting in winter, focus on the architecture and the interior of the Atlantic Sea-Park aquarium.
How long for the Aksla viewpoint?
Budget 90 minutes. The climb takes 20 minutes, but you will want time at the top for photos and the cafe. If you take the city train or drive up, 45 minutes is enough, but walking from the park is the classic experience.
