Is Rwanda expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Short answer

Rwanda is a high-cost destination mainly because of its wildlife permits: a mountain gorilla permit costs US$1,500, golden monkeys US$100 and chimpanzees US$150. Without the permits, daily costs are moderate for East Africa, at about RWF 255,000 (roughly US$175) per person mid-range, with a car and driver being the other big expense. Kigali itself is affordable for food and local transport.

Where the money goes

Park permits dominate the budget for most visitors, led by the US$1,500 gorilla permit, all paid in US dollars. A car with driver-guide is the next big cost, because the parks need early starts and distances are long on winding roads. Lodges near the parks range from simple guesthouses to luxury lodges at RWF 1,000,000-3,000,000 a night. Food and buses are cheap, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial is free.

When it is cheaper

The long rains from March to May bring fewer visitors and some lodge discounts (often 20-30%, check current offers), though permit prices stay the same. Low-season permit discounts have been offered in some years; check with the Rwanda Development Board.
