Where the money goes

Accommodation is the main cost, from €60-100 in the New Town to €120-220 in Old Town boutique hotels or Lindos, and more at east-coast resorts. Car hire (about €35-50 a day in summer) is useful for the south and west. Food is reasonable in tavernas but pricey at touted Old Town restaurants and in Lindos, while sunbeds, boat trips to Symi and fish by the kilo add up.

When it is cheaper

April-May and October-November are much cheaper than July and August, with hotel rates often roughly 30-50% lower; Rhodes has one of the longest seasons in Greece, so many places stay open into November.
