Is Marrakech expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Marrakech is cheap by European standards, though it is the most tourist-priced city in Morocco and costs more than Fes or Rabat. A budget traveller can manage on about MAD 540 (roughly €50) per person a day sharing a room, mid-range about MAD 1,500 and comfort about MAD 4,400. Local food and transport are very cheap; riads, rooftop restaurants, tours and shopping are where the money goes.

Where the money goes
Riads take a large share, from MAD 400-700 for simple ones to MAD 800-1,600 near Jemaa el-Fna. Sights such as the Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, Majorelle and Le Jardin Secret add MAD 100-165 each, and day trips to the Atlas or Agafay cost MAD 400-900 per person. Food can be very cheap at local counters or expensive on rooftop terraces, and souvenirs are a hidden cost unless you haggle well.
When it is cheaper
July and August, when temperatures reach about 40°C, and January (outside New Year) are usually cheaper, often roughly 20-30% below spring and autumn rates. Easter, Christmas and New Year are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Eat at local counters for harira, bissara, msemen and snail broth, a few dirhams each.
- Ask the total before sitting at a Jemaa el-Fna stall and refuse dishes you did not order.
- Haggle in the souks, starting at a third to half of the first price; check cooperatives with fixed prices first.
- Try a local public hammam (MAD 20-50) instead of a spa.
- Use bus 19 from the airport or metered petit taxis rather than unofficial drivers.
- Choose a riad with breakfast included; it is usually generous.
