Is Madagascar expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Day-to-day costs in Madagascar are low: local meals, guesthouses and park fees are cheap by European standards. What makes a trip expensive is getting around: a car with driver-guide, domestic flights and international flights to the island. A budget day is about 140,000 Ar per person (very roughly €28), mid-range about 420,000 Ar and comfort about 950,000 Ar.

Where the money goes
Transport is the biggest cost for most visitors: a car with driver-guide (about 250,000–450,000 Ar a day for 2–4 passengers) works out at about 150,000 Ar per person a day on the mid-range budget, and the domestic flight back from Toliara is extra. A bed costs about 40,000 Ar per person sharing in RN7 guesthouses, 120,000 Ar at park lodges and 350,000 Ar in boutique lodges, plus a small tourist tax. Food is cheap, about 30,000 Ar a day in hotelys and 70,000 Ar in lodges. Park fees and the compulsory local guides cost roughly 30,000–150,000 Ar a day depending on the park and group size.
When it is cheaper
Lodges may offer lower rates in the rainy season from December to March, but roads flood and cyclones are possible, so savings come with real risk. The busiest and priciest periods are July–August and October–November; book drivers and lodges early then.
How to spend less
- Travel as a group of 3–4 to share the cost of a car with driver-guide, which is priced per vehicle.
- Eat in local hotelys for rice and laoka at 5,000–15,000 Ar instead of every meal at the lodge.
- Choose community reserves such as Anja, where fees are low and go directly to the village.
- Agree the route, fuel, the driver's meals and room, and park fees in writing before paying a deposit.
- Withdraw ariary in Tana or Antsirabe; ATMs are rare further south and cash is needed for guides and lodges.
- Use the long drive days as sightseeing so you need fewer paid tours, and keep one spare day for rescheduled flights.
