Where the money goes
A car is close to essential, so rental and fuel are a fixed daily cost; the beach boats and the Diafani boat add to it. Rooms are moderately priced and cheapest in Pigadia. Food is good value, especially in the villages. The biggest single cost is often getting there: flights from Athens or Rhodes, or a long ferry. Greece also charges a per-room, per-night climate resilience fee, higher from April to October.
When it is cheaper
May, June and September are cheaper than July and August for rooms and cars; many hotels close from November to April.
How to spend less
- Stay in Pigadia for the cheapest rooms, with the port, buses and tavernas.
- Share a rental car for the island's long distances.
- Take the boat to Diafani for Olympos instead of a long drive there and back in one day.
- Eat in the hill villages and Olympos, where local dishes are simple and fairly priced.
- Book flights from Athens early; fares rise in summer.
- Swim at free beaches such as Vronti, Amoopi and Lefkos rather than paying for sunbeds.
