Where the money goes
Summer accommodation in Hvar Town takes most of the budget, followed by boats: taxi boats, rented motorboats and speedboat trips to Vis and the Blue Cave (about €100–130). Restaurants on Hvar Town's harbour and in Palmižana charge resort prices, and beach clubs add drinks and sunbeds. Stari Grad, Jelsa and Vrboska have cheaper rooms and meals, and ferry and bus fares are modest.
When it is cheaper
June and September are cheaper than July–August, and May and October cheaper still; from November to March many places close.
How to spend less
- Stay in Stari Grad, Jelsa or Vrboska and visit Hvar Town for a day.
- Use the Jadrolinija car ferry to Stari Grad instead of the catamaran if you have time.
- Take the local bus timed with the ferries rather than a taxi.
- Picnic on the Pakleni Islands instead of eating at Palmižana's konobas.
- Share a motorboat between four to six people for the coves.
- Taste wine directly at family wineries in Svirče or Sveta Nedjelja.
