Is Ella expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Ella is cheap by international standards, although it is one of the pricier places in the Sri Lankan hill country because of its popularity with foreign visitors. A budget day is about Rs 8,000 per person, mid-range about Rs 22,000 and comfort about Rs 55,000; tourist cafés, hilltop resorts and private drivers cost the most.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, and hotels often quote in US dollars with service charge and taxes added. Food varies widely: local rice and curry is inexpensive, while the cafés on the main street charge two or three times more. The main walks (Little Adam's Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge, Ella Rock) are free, so the extra spending is on tuk-tuks, guides and day trips by car to Lipton's Seat and Diyaluma.
When it is cheaper
Rooms are usually cheaper from about May to November, outside the main January to April season and the European winter holidays; check whether quoted prices include taxes.
How to spend less
- Eat rice and curry at local restaurants rather than in tourist cafés.
- Use PickMe or agree tuk-tuk fares before setting off.
- Walk to Little Adam's Peak and the Nine Arch Bridge instead of taking tuk-tuks.
- Share a car with other travellers for the Lipton's Seat and Diyaluma day.
- Ask whether a room price includes service charge and taxes.
- Take the train in reserved second or third class; it is cheap.
